The USA and China are expected to battle for the top of this list as in previous years (see the final 2016 table), though the home team Japan is always going to do well. Here is the final top medal count. Congratulations to Bermuda and the Philippines for winning their first gold medal ever. The host country Japan performed better than expected, though the United States and China teams led the way as predicted. 65 countries won at least one gold medal, 93 countries won at least one medal of any type.
