Marathon Montreal 1976 Olympic Games

The men’s marathon at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games in Canada was won by East German runner Waldemar Cierpinski. Here is a 6-minute highlight video of the race, and for some reason the footage stops just before Cierpinski crosses the line. See more on the men’s Olympic Games marathon.

100m Men's Sprint 1976 Montreal Olympic Games

Johnson wins Seoul 1988 Olympics Men’s 100m Final

Ben Johnson wins by ‘a mile’ in the men’s 100m sprint event. His time was 9.79 seconds. He was very quickly stripped of his win as he tested positive to performance enhancing drugs. Second in the race (eventual gold medalist) was Carl Lewis and 3rd was UK runner Linford Christie. See more on the History of the Olympics 100m sprint.

Whistler Downhill Ski Course

When I first posted this video in 2010, I was in awe of the footage of a world-class downhill skiing course from the view of the skiier. Nowadays with GoPro cameras, it is very common to get the athlete’s view of them performing their sport.

Great Curling Shot

Canadian Jennifer Jones with her best curling shot, to win the 2006 Scott Tournament of Hearts. It is the last rock on the 10th end, and she needed this very difficult shot to come off to win. You don’t have to know the rules, just their response is enough to tell you that they pulled off something special.

Speedy Skeleton Girls

Clip of skeleton girls from the 2010 Winter Olympics. These girls could be considered crazy, racing down the track at speeds up to 130 km/h (80 mph), with no steering or braking mechanism.

Cool Running Jamaican Bobsled Team

Video of the original Jamaican Bobsled team, from the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary Canada, that inspired the movie ‘Cool Runnings’ can’t be shown here. This trailer of the movie is much more entertaining anyway. In the movie they show the original footage of when they crashed, but many other parts of the true story have been changed or embellished for the movie.
