Winter Olympics: The Number of Medal Events Over Time

The first official Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix France, attended by 16 nations with just 16 medal events. The number of events, and therefore the number of available medals, has steadily increased over time. The latest Winter Games in 2022 in Beijing had 91 nations competing with 109 events. The number of medal events for the 2026 Milan & Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics has increased to 116, the most ever.
