Beep Test Spreadsheet - FAQ

I have created a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that can be used to record and analyze the beep test results of your athletes or teams. You can purchase the file, or get it as part of the beep test package. If you have purchased the file already, and you have any problems or questions, they may be answered below. Otherwise, drop me a line.

Using the Spreadsheet

There are two main worksheets in the excel file, one for recording the results of a single athlete, and another for the results of a class/team/squad. You can modify the athlete or squad sheet to suit your needs. Some of the columns refer to a lookup table that needs to remain in the file for it to work correctly.

FAQ

Some of the formula in this excel file refers to another worksheet. Can I make changes to that worksheet?

In earlier versions of the spreadsheet, the lookup table was on a hidden tab, but that is not the case now. If it is hidden, right-click any sheet tab and select "Unhide". In the Unhide box, select the hidden sheet "Lookup Table" and click OK (or double-click the sheet name). Now you can see the data used for the calculations, and make any changes you wish.

Can the spreadsheet be used for a 15m beep test?

To use the spreadsheet for a beep test over a distance other than 20m, you won't have to adjust the age, decimal values, total time, as that will be no different. You could make adjustments to correct total distance run. However, the ratings and VO2max calculation would not apply and is not something that can be adjusted easily. To correct the total distance run, you will first need to change the formula in that column, replacing 20 for whatever the distance run, then you would have to "unhide" the hidden lookup table on the spreadsheet (see above) and adjust the figures on the total distance column. It is not very simple but can be done.

I have data from my athletes on what I think is a good, average excellent etc rating. How can I change your "rating" column values to reflect my ratings?

It is possible to make changes so that a particular score has a different rating. First you have to "unhide" the hidden "lookup table" on the spreadsheet (see above). On the lookup table worksheet you will see a table for males and females, listing the rating for each score. You can adjust the ratings on the appropriate columns to whatever you want.

Is the VO2max calculation different for males and females?

It's the same formula for males and females. VO2max is dependent on the beep test level achieved, no matter who achieves it. See the beep test formula. If you select female on the spreadsheet, the VO2max score is the same, but the rating may change.

What are the VO2max calculations and ratings scores based on?

The formula used in the spreadsheet for calculating VO2max is based on the published tables in Ramsbottom et al. (1988) "A progressive shuttle run test to estimate maximal oxygen uptake." British Journal of Sports Medicine 22: 141-5. (See the beep calculator). The data values for the other columns are from these tables.
