The Women's T20 World Cup provides a platform for the best women's cricketers in the world to showcase their skills and compete for the top prize in the shortest format of the game. The tournament has grown steadily in popularity and importance, with more countries fielding competitive teams and the quality of play improving.

For the first three tournaments, eight countries participated. This was raised to ten from 2014, and to twelve for the 2026 edition. The ICC has confirmed a further expansion to 16 teams from 2030.
