The food supplied in the athlete's village at the Commonwealth Games needs to cater to a diversity of sports, cultures, ages and special dietary needs. Here is some information about the village and food menu for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. See more about Commonwealth Games nutrition.
About the Village and Food Hall
The athletes were originally going to be housed in a single athletes' village in Perry Barr, but this changed to multiple villages closer to competition venues, at the University of Birmingham (2,800 athletes and officials), the University of Warwick (1,900 athletes and officials), and the NEC Hotel Campus (1,600 athletes and officials). Each site included top-class services such as entertainment hubs, gyms, and dining halls to cater to the large number of athletes and officials.
As always, the dining halls needed to provide a diverse mixture of foods for more than 70 Commonwealth delegations, with a variety of food service sections providing a mixture of cuisines. Outside of the dining hall, there were also street food stalls or food trucks in place for those looking for a quick bite.
There was also a range of foods to suit specific dietary needs, such as gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, nut-free. Nutritional information was also provided on all food served so the athletes could be aware of all ingredients in case of any other allergies or intolerances.
At the largest village at the University of Birmingham, the athletes were staying in student accommodation, which included a shared kitchen which also provided the athletes the opportunity to have more control over their nutrition if required.
