Birmingham, England 2022
The XXII (22nd) Commonwealth Games are to be held in Birmingham, the United Kingdom. The event was planned to be held in Durban, South Africa in July 2022, however, the city was forced to withdraw from hosting the event. In December 2017, Birmingham in the UK were officially awarded the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
This will be the third Commonwealth Games to be hosted in England following London 1934 and Manchester 2002. The Games are expected to take place between 27 July - 7 August 2022.
- Two cities originally bid for the games; Durban and Edmonton, Canada, though Edmonton withdrew in February 2015, leaving Durban as the only bid when the host was announced in September 2015.
- The games were originally set to open on 18 July 2022, which coincides with the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela.
- Shooting and archery were initially controversially left off the program, though later it was annouced that a Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships will be held in Chandigarh in India, which will count to the overall Birmingham 2022 medals table later in the year.
