Soviet Union at the Euros

The Soviet Union's best performance at the Euros was becoming champions in the inaugural 1960 edition, defeating Yugoslavia 2-1 in the final match.

The soviet union finished second in the following tournament in 1964, and second again in 1972. There only other appearance as the USSR was in 1968 when they finished 4th.

In 1992 the Soviet team qualified for the finals, though by that stage the USSR had broken up and their Football Federation disbanded. A unified team was temporarily created, called the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), so they were still able to take part in the competition.

The tournament record of the Soviet Union was succeeded by Russia, which continued the success of the USSR. Russia's best performance has come in the 2008 tournament when they reached the semi-finals.

Some nations that were once part of the Soviet Union have participated in the European Championships since the country was broken up: Latvia, Ukraine, and Russia.
