Online Sports Betting in Canada

Topend Sports has tracked athlete performance and the numbers behind sport since 1997, and we bring that same evidence first approach to betting, whether you follow the NHL, the NFL, the NBA or soccer. Single game betting has been legal across Canada since August 2021, and with the country co hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Toronto and Vancouver, there has never been a bigger moment to bet at home.

Ontario residents: the sportsbooks featured in our rankings are scoped to Canadian bettors outside Ontario and are not registered with iGaming Ontario. If you are located in Ontario, you must use a sportsbook licensed by iGaming Ontario, listed at igamingontario.ca. Betting with unlicensed operators may not offer the same consumer protections.

How Online Sports Betting Works

Online sports betting means staking money on the outcome of a sporting event through a sportsbook website or app. You open an account, add funds, choose a market, and you are paid out if your prediction is correct. A moneyline backs a team to win, and in soccer it is a three way market that also includes the draw, something to watch if you are used to the NHL or NBA where there is no tie. A point spread handicaps the favourite, and a total is a bet on the combined score.

Canadian sportsbooks show odds as decimals by default. A price of 2.50 means a 10 dollar bet returns 25 dollars in total, stake included, and most books let you switch to American odds if you prefer. A short price like 1.50 is a favourite, a longer price like 4.00 is an underdog. You can combine selections into a parlay for a bigger payout at higher risk, or bet live as the game unfolds. Betting Rules and Regulation

Single game sports betting has been legal across Canada since 27 August 2021, but how you bet depends on your province. Ontario is the only province with a fully regulated private operator market, run by iGaming Ontario and the AGCO, and Ontario residents should use only iGO registered sportsbooks. Other provinces run their own government platforms, such as PlayNow in British Columbia, Mise o jeu plus in Quebec through Loto Quebec, and the Atlantic Lottery. Offshore operators that hold international licences also accept Canadian bettors outside Ontario, a legal grey area that is not provincially regulated in most provinces but is not prohibited, so always check the rules where you live.

The minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. As of 2026, Canada does not tax recreational gambling winnings, so you keep 100 percent of what you win. If you bet with an offshore site, be aware that any self exclusion may apply to that site alone.

The Sports Science Edge

This is what sets Topend Sports apart from a standard betting site. Since 1997 we have hosted one of the largest open archives of athlete fitness testing data anywhere, and that data feeds straight into how we read a market. We do not claim fitness numbers pick winners, we use them the way a sharp bettor uses any edge, as one more input most of the field ignores. With Canada co hosting the 2026 World Cup, that context matters more than ever.

Betting Responsibly

Betting should stay fun and within your means. Set a deposit limit before you start, treat any stake as money you can afford to lose, and never chase losses. If betting stops feeling like entertainment, use the limits and self exclusion tools every regulated sportsbook provides. If you bet with an offshore site, any self exclusion may apply to that site alone.

If gambling is affecting you or someone you know, free confidential support is available through ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600, and every province runs its own problem gambling helpline. You must be 19 or over to bet in most provinces, or 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
