Sporting Highlights for 2004

Here are the sporting highlights of the world of sport in 2004. The major sporting event of this year was the Olympic Games held in Athens Greece.

On Jul 4th Maria Sharapova defeated the defending champion and the top seed Serena Williams in straight sets to become the third youngest women to win the Wimbledon at just 17 years of age. Though the victory was termed by the media as the most stunning upset in recent memory, Sharapova continued her ascent up the rankings and reached the world's no. 1 in Sept 2005.

Lionel Messi, who has won the Ballon d'Or five times, is considered as the greatest player of all time. It all started on Oct 16th of this year, when Messi made his debut for Barcelona at just 17 years, 3 months, and 22 days of age. Though he played only 77 minutes in his debut season and did not score any goals that year, his achievements in the following years are well known.

Michael Schumacher had the best season of his entire career winning 13 of the 18 races breaking his own record of 11 wins set in 2002. Schumacher won the first five races and 12 of the first 13 races on this year.

The 2004 Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards went to motorsport's Michael Schumacher and golfer Annika Sörenstam.

In the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong won his sixth consecutive race, though in 2012 he was stripped of all his wins after doping allegations were proven correct.

The most disastrous sports related incident of the year happened on October 24th, when the plane carrying, John Hendrick and Ricky Hendrick of Hendrik motorsports and eight other people, crashed killing all of them aboard.
