The UEFA Champions League is an annual football club competition played between the European national league champions and other top clubs from Europe. At the time it was called the European Champion Clubs' Cup (though commonly known as the "European Cup").
The final of the 1961 European Cup was played at Wankdorf Stadium, Bern, Switzerland on May 31, 1961. The match was won by Benfica of Portugal. It was the first time Real Madrid were not winners of the tournament.
