The major event in orange sport is the Totnes Orange Race, in South Devon, UK. In a series of races, entrants chase oranges down High St and Fore St, something similar to the cheese rolling races.
Orange rolling in Totnes is said to date back to when Sir Francis Drake visited the town in the late 16th century, when he may or may not have knocked over an orange cart sending then rolling down the street.
The race involves a 450-meter dash from Market Square at the top of the hill, down Fore Street. At the start, contestants throw or roll their orange down the hill ahead of them, and must continue to kick or throw it to the finishing line. Many splattered oranges are left behind on the road. The winner must arrive with an orange, but it does not necessarily have be his own!
