Turkey have played in the FIFA World Cup thrice, in 1954, 2002 and 2026. In 1954, they did not progress past the group stage, finishing in ninth position. In 2002, Turkey finished third. They were defeated 1–0 to eventual tournament winners Brazil in the semi-final, then in the bronze medal match defeated co-hosts South Korea 3–2.
1954
Turkey lost 2-7 to Germany in the playoff of the 1954 FIFA World Cup.
2002
Turkey reached the semi final of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but lost 0-1 to Brazil. The team finished third in the competition after winning the third place match against South Korea.
2026
Turkey qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, returning to the finals for the first time in 24 years since their third-place run in 2002. They were drawn into Group D alongside the United States, Paraguay, and Australia.
Despite dominating possession in their opening two matches, Turkey lost both to Australia and Paraguay and were eliminated after matchday two. However, they defeated the United States 3–2 in their final group game. This is the team's first World Cup win since 2002, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Kaan Ayhan. They finished bottom of the group.

Trivia
- The first country to be progress by the toss of coin in the qualifying round was Turkey, which beat Spain on toss after a 2:2 tie in a play-off match on 17 March 1954.
