Iraq qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their first appearance at the finals in 40 years since 1986. They were drawn into Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Norway.
Iraq lost all three of their matches and finished bottom of the group, beaten by Norway, France, and Senegal. Their return ended winless, leaving them still searching for a first ever World Cup victory across both their appearances.

Trivia
- After a World Cup match on 8 June, 1986, Iraqi defender Barmeer Shaker was given a one-year suspension by FIFA for spitting at the referee. Iraq lost the match to Belgium 2-1.
