Kiteboarding is coming to the Olympics, but it is taking a while. Back in 2012, the International Sailing Federation announced that kitesurfing would replace windsurfing for the 2016 Rio Olympics, however, this was later overturned.
For the Tokyo Olympics, lobbying by the windsurfing fraternity keep the sport in and kiteboarding out, however in Paris 2024 kiteboarding is set to make its Summer Olympic Games debut. It is expected that the official format will be Formula Kite, which involves races on kiteboards with hydrofoils. The French city of Marseille will host the kiteboarding events.
Formula Kite will be the official kiteboarding equipment for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It features a hydrofoil kiteboard and a ram-air kite that will be manufactured by licensed companies. Unlike in a one-design concept, such as used for the windsurfing event, the new Formula Kite class allows different models from different manufacturers to compete against each other on an Olympic level playing field.
