Sporting Highlights for 1967

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1967. This was the first year that the Super Bowl was held. The game was played on the 15th of January between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers won 35-10.



It was yet another year of Australian domination in men's tennis with the end of one and the emergence of another. Roy Emerson won the Australian Open and the French Open for his 12th and last career grand slam title. John Newcombe won the Wimbledon and the US Open for his first and second titles en-route to a career with seven grand slam titles. In WTA, Billie Jean King defended her Wimbledon title and also won the US Open for the third of her total 12 career grand slam titles.

Jack Nicklaus, the most accomplished golf player to date, won the U.S. Open for the second time and his seventh major title. Kathy Whitworth, who had won a major in each of the last two years, won two major titles, the Women's Western Open and the LPGA Championship. She would also win the LPGA Championship two more times in the future to finish her career with six major wins.

Formula 1 was not as safe as it is in present days and claimed the life of another driver, Italian Lorenzo Bandini, during an on-race crash at Monaco Grand Prix. Denny Hulme won the year's driver's championship for the Brabham team by a five-point margin.

Kathryn Switzer became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon.

There were 43 deaths and at least 300 injuries from crowd violence during a football match between the clubs of Kayserispor and Sivasspor at the Atatürk Stadium of Kayseri in Türkiye.
