Sporting Highlights for 1952
Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1952. The major events of this year in sport were the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
It was the year of the Olympics and the Summer Games was held in Helsinki, Finland and the Winter Games was held in Oslo, Norway. The host nation Norway won the Winter Games by taking 11 gold medals and a 16 total medals. The United States won the Summer Games taking 40 gold medals and 76 total medals.
Frank Sedgman won the Wimbledon for the first time in his career. It was also his fourth grand slam win. The same year he also successfully defended his US Open title for a fifth and final title of his career.
Maureen Connolly Brinker won her second slam title at the Wimbledon. She also defended her US Open title that year and continued a run which ended with six consecutive slam titles, which includes a golden slam in the following year, a feat that has been achieved only by one other women since then.
Babe Zaharias won the Titleholders Championship for the third time and for her ninth career major. Louise Suggs, who has won 11 majors, won the U.S. Women's Open for the second time and his sixth major title. Suggs would also go on to win the LPGA Championship in 1957, two years after was founded, to finish her career with a win at all four majors.
