Sporting Highlights for 1928

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1928. It was the year of the Olympics and the Summer Games was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the Winter Games was held in St. Moritz, Switzerland. In the summer games, the United States easily came out on top winning a total of 56 medals which included 22 gold medals. Germany finished second with 10 gold and 31 total medals. Finland finished third with 8 gold and 25 total medals.



Norway, the traditional powerhouse of the winter games, finished on top with six gold and 15 total medals. The United States took six total medals to finish second. Sweden, who had the same number of gold and silver medals as the United States, were one bronze short, and finished in third place.

Nicolas Frantz from Luxembourg won the Tour de France event for the second straight year. His turned in a performance that was better than his previous year's outing, by taking five stages as opposed to three from the previous year.

Henri Cochet won the French Open and the US Open that year, two of his seven total grand slam titles. Jean Borotra and René Lacoste, two other Frenchmen, took the Australian Open and the Wimbledon titles respectively.

Helen Wills Moody, who won two slams the previous year, took three slams that year, only missing out on the Australian Open.
