Tiger Woods has regained the title of the world's highest paid athlete, after last year year dropping to third place behind boxers Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Below is the top 10 of the highest earning sports people from 2013, taken from the annual list “The World's 100 Highest-Paid Athletes” published by Forbes magazine in June 2013.
Tiger's earning comprised 65 million from endorsements, and 13.1 from prize money. Last year's highest-paid athlete, Floyd Mayweather, is 14th. David Beckham was No. 8 overall and the highest-ranked footballer at $47.2 million. There were 27 baseball players on the list, with New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was ranked highest at no.18 overall with $30.3 million. The Forbes' list only included active athletes. If it didn't, basketball legend Michael Jordan would be No.1 with an income of $80 million.
The highest paid female athlete was Maria Sharapova with 29 million dollars in earnings, ranking her 22nd on this list. The other females on the list were tennis players Serena Williams at 68 ($20.5 mil) and Chinese player Li Na, who came in at no. 85 ($18.2 mil).
The earnings totals (in US dollars) are derived from salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees, licensing and endorsement income in the 12 months from May 1, 2012 to May 1, 2013. Taxes or agents' fees are not factored into the figures. See also the Forbes top earning lists from other years.
