Supermarket Shopping Tour Task: Healthy Lunch on a Budget

This is an exercise task that can be conducted as part of a supermarket shopping tour. The aim of the Healthy Lunch on a Budget Task is to buy the food you will need for lunch that day, that is sandwiches or bread rolls and a fruit salad. Along the way, you will need to fact find in the supermarket to fill in the tables on the downloadable worksheet (not yet available). See also a similar supermarket tour scavenger hunt.



For each 'purchase', you record the cost. If you have any money left after buying the foods that are necessary for good health, you may purchase a treat food for your group.

The printable resource (not yet available) will expand on the steps outlined below, and provide spaces for the participants to record the results, and calculate costs.

Step 1: Go to the bread section of the supermarket, and list 5 different types of bread, and their price. Then, taking price and taste into account choose which type of bread you want to buy.

Step 2: Go to the cheese section of the supermarket, and list 5 different types of cheeses, and the price. Taking price and convenience into account choose which type of cheese you want to buy.

Step 3: Go to the sandwich meat section of the supermarket. Name four different types of meat you could have on your sandwich. Also, work out the fat content of each, the information you need is on the nutrition information panel.

Step 4: Go to the fresh produce (fruit and vegetables) section of the supermarket, and list four different types of salad fillings you could have on your sandwich, and the price. You need to choose ones that are different colors.

Step 5: Stay in the fresh produce (fruit and vegetables) section of the supermarket, and find five different types of fruit you could have in your fruit salad, and note the price. You need to choose ones that are different colors.
