The Players Championship is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour, often considered the unofficial "fifth major."

The inaugural edition of the tournament was in 1974, won by Jack Nicklaus. It was the first of his three wins.  

Since 1982 has been played at the TPC Sawgrass stadium course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA.

The tournament typically features one of the strongest fields in golf, with the world's top players competing for a significant purse and prestige.

While it is not officially recognized as a major championship, winning The Players Championship is highly esteemed and is often considered a career-defining achievement for professional golfers.

Trivia

• Jack Nicklaus won the tournament three time, in 1974, 1976, 1978. Each of his three victories were at different courses.
• The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic (after the first round had been played)
• The 50th edition of the Players Championship tournament was played in 2024.
• Scottie Scheffler is the only player to successfully defend the title, winning in 2023 and 2024.
