There was an exhibition of the uniquely Australia sport of Australian Rules Football at the 1982 Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane. Table Tennis was also a Commonwealth Games demonstration sport in 1982.
The match was played between the VFL Grand Finalists, Richmond and Carlton, who had met each other in the grand final 11 days earlier.
The game was played at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (Gabba) on 6 October 1982. The game between these bitter rivals was played in front of a full house, which included Prince Philip. The match itself included some great players such as Kevin Bartlett, Peter Bosustow, Brian Taylor and Maurice Rioli.
It was a high-scoring match, won by Richmond by 18 points, the same margin by which Carlton won in the Grand Final 11 days earlier.
Richmond 28 - 16 - 184
Carlton 26 -10 - 166
