India at the Commonwealth Games
India is the most populous country in the Commonwealth, though success has come slowly. In November 2003 the city of Delhi was awarded the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In the second ever Commonwealth Games to be held in an Asian country, India performed very well finishing high on the medal tally.
- The Republic of India joined the Commonwealth during 1947 after attaining independence.
- India have been to twelve Games, since attending their first Games in 1934.
- India underpinned its status as an emerging power in world sport with an outstanding 69 medal haul in Manchester in 2002 to take their overall medal tally at the time to 222 achieved in eleven Games and across nine sports disciplines.
- Traditionally, India have won their medals in boxing, badminton, wrestling and weight lifting, however this list has expanded to include shooting, athletics, hockey, judo and table tennis.
