The Baseball World Classic is an international baseball tournament, first held in 2006. The 5th Baseball World Classic was scheduled to be held in 2021. However, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and was rescheduled to be played in 2023 from March 8-21.
Twenty teams participated, four more than the previous event in 2017. The USA were the defending champions from 2017. As in previous tournaments, there are multiple host countries: Japan, Taiwan and United States.
The Participants
The 16 national teams which participated at the 2017 World Baseball Classic automatically qualified for this tournament. A qualifying tournament was held to determine the final four teams.
The teams in the 2023 tournament were: Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, South Korea, United States, Venezuela
The Czech Republic, Great Britain, and Nicaragua made their very first appearance in the World Baseball Classic.
Results
The USA defeated Cuba 14–2 in one semi final. In the other semi final, Japan defeated Mexico 6-5.
The final, played in LoanDepot Park in Miami, United States, was between two-time winners Japan and the defending champions the USA. The Japanese team won 3-2.
