At inaugural Championships in Belgrade in 1973, the swimming program included 15 events for male athletes, and 14 events for female athletes.

Since the 9th Championships in Fukuoka in 2001, 20 events in the
swimming program have been contested by the male and female athletes. -
In 1986, the 4 x 200m freestyle relay for women was added to the program.
