Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1936. It was the year of the Olympics and the Summer Games was held in Berlin, Germany and the Winter Games was held in Bavaria, Germany. The host nation Germany finished the summer games on top with 88 total medals, and were relegated to second place in the winter games in which Norway finished on top.
The now defunct Women's Western Open was the only major women's golf event conducted that year. American Opal Hill successfully defended her title from previous year to secure her second and final major win.
Horton Smith and Denny Shute won the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship respectively. It was the second major win for both the golfers. While it was the last major win for Smith, his first also coming from the same event, Shute defended his PGA Championship win the following year and finished his career with three major titles.
Fred Perry won the Wimbledon title for the third straight time and his seventh grand slam win. He also won the US Open later that year, which was his third win at the event also, for his eighth and final career grand slam title.
In women's tennis, Helena Jacobs, who had won four straight US Open titles until then, won Wimbledon for her fifth career grand slam title.
