A new balance test was added to the NHL Combine in 2015, called the Y Balance Test. This test is a dynamic test performed in a single-leg stance that requires strength, flexibility, core control and proprioception. This is the latest in a series of balance and core stability type tests that they have trialed over the years. It looks like a pretty complex test to perform, but seems a good objective measure of balance. Previously they have used a balance board, single-leg squats and a Hex Agility test (like the like the hexagon test). See more about the Y Balance Test.

The AFL are searching worldwide to find tall players. Here is a highlight package of the 4th international combine held by the AFL (Australian Football League). I would love to see how these guys go if given a chance to play AFL. You can see the top results from this combine, their athleticism matches the Aussie combine efforts.

The 2014 Brownlow medal winner Matt Priddis is put through his paces on a series of reaction time tests at the Edith Cowan University Sports Science department. It shows a good range of basic reaction time tests, then a couple of more sport specific tests that are more relevant to this Aussie Rules footballer. The Polar BodyAge fitness assessment determines a single universal assessment unit with just a few simple tests – the physical body age. This promotional video goes through an actual test showing off all the features. It is a pretty cool universal system with all the tests integrated and results and fitness programs produced from the results. I particularly like the sit and reach test, using a cable system built into the unit. See more on the Polar BodyAge assessment, and the Polar Fitness Test (OwnIndex).

There are several sports in Australia that take the name football – Union, League, Soccer and Aussie Rules. There are many great athletes in each of these sports. In 2010 there was a 100m race organized to find out the fastest man in football. The best in AFL were not able to join them. Rugby Union got the bragging rights, with the two union players coming in first and second: Lachlan Turner and John Grant. See more about this event and other sprint races between rugby players.

This is an official Indo Board Video, show Indo Board President, Hunter Joslin, on the DBZ Show demonstrating all his tricks. The Indo Board is great for improving your balance, particularly if you are a surfer. As one commenter said, a piece of wood and pvc pipe could also do the trick, but it would not look as good. See more about the Indo Board.
