Ballon d'Or 2026 - The 70th Edition Moves to London

Who makes the 30-man shortlist for football's most prestigious individual award

30 NOMINEES
26 OCTOBER
70 TH EDITION

The Ballon d'Or 2026 nominees have not been announced yet. France Football and UEFA confirmed the ceremony date in May 2026 and said the list of nominees would follow "in due course," without naming a day. Nothing had been published as of 25 August 2026. This page tracks the shortlist and updates the moment it lands.

What is confirmed is the occasion date and venue. The 70th Ballon d'Or takes place in London on Monday 26 October 2026, the first time in the award's history that it leaves Paris. The evening doubles as a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the Blackpool and England winger who won the very first Ballon d'Or in 1956.

The award covers the 2025-26 season, from August 2025 to the end of July 2026. That window swallows an entire World Cup, and the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States has scrambled the field. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final on 19 July, so a large block of Spanish players suddenly has a case. To read more about the game itself, visit our football content page.

The result is one of the most open races in years. A striker with a historic goal return, a teenage world champion, a defensive midfielder who won the World Cup Golden Ball without scoring, and the two most decorated forwards of the modern era all have a genuine argument. Ousmane Dembélé, the 2025 winner, is no longer the favourite to keep it.

Ballon d'Or 2026 Shortlist Status and Key Dates

Status as of 25 August 2026 - the official 30-man shortlist has not been released. Anything you see described online as the "confirmed 2026 nominees list" is a prediction, including the table further down this page. We will replace it with the official list on the day it is published.

There is a useful precedent for timing. The 2025 nominees were unveiled on 7 August 2025 for a 22 September ceremony, a gap of roughly six and a half weeks. Apply the same lead time to a 26 October date and the announcement lands in early to mid September 2026. That is an inference from past practice, not a published date.

Confirmed Dates

Date Event Status
28 May 2026 Ceremony date and host city announced Confirmed
31 July 2026 End of the period being judged Confirmed
September 2026 (expected) 30-man shortlist published Not yet confirmed
26 October 2026 Ceremony in London, winner announced Confirmed

The London venue has not been named. Neither has the start time, though the ceremony has traditionally run through the evening in the host city. Media accreditation details were also held back in the May announcement.

The 30 Players in Line for a Ballon d'Or 2026 Nomination

Below is our projection of the shortlist, built from the three criteria the jury is asked to apply - decisive individual performances, team achievements, and class and fair play. Clubs are correct as of 25 August 2026, which matters this year because several contenders moved in the summer window. Rodri joined Barcelona from Manchester City, Ferran Torres went the other way from Barcelona to PSG, and Marc Cucurella left Chelsea for Real Madrid.

The Contenders - 34 Names for 30 Places

Topend Sports projection, listed alphabetically by surname - this is not the official list

Viktor Gyökeres Arsenal Sweden 28 Arsenal's top scorer in a title-winning debut season

Kylian Mbappé Real Madrid France 27 World Cup Golden Boot, Pichichi and Champions League top scorer
Nuno Mendes Paris Saint-Germain Portugal 24 Champions League and Ligue 1, first-choice in the final
Mikel Merino Arsenal Spain 30 Premier League title plus two late World Cup knockout winners
Lionel Messi Inter Miami Argentina 39 World Cup Silver Ball with 8 goals and 4 assists at 39
Michael Olise Bayern Munich France 24 Bundesliga Player of the Season, 19 league assists
Dani Olmo Barcelona Spain 28 La Liga title and a World Cup winner's medal
Mikel Oyarzabal Real Sociedad Spain 29 Spain's top scorer at the World Cup with 5, Copa del Rey winner
Pedri Barcelona Spain 23 La Liga title. Won the FIFA 2026 World Cup
Pedro Porro Tottenham Hotspur Spain 26 Scored in the semi-final win over France
David Raya Arsenal Spain 30 A third straight Golden Glove with 19 clean sheets, league title
Declan Rice Arsenal England 27 Premier League title, Champions League final, World Cup bronze
Rodri Barcelona Spain 30 World Cup Golden Ball as the anchor of the champions
Fabián Ruiz Paris Saint-Germain Spain 30 Champions League, Ligue 1 and the World Cup in one season
Bukayo Saka Arsenal England 24 Premier League title and a World Cup hat-trick against France
Unai Simón Athletic Club Spain 29 World Cup Golden Glove, 7 clean sheets in 8 matches
Ferran Torres Paris Saint-Germain Spain 26 Scored the winning goal in the World Cup final
Vinícius Júnior Real Madrid Brazil 26 Heavy goal and assist output but did not win any trophy with Real Madrid in the 2025/26 season.
Vitinha Paris Saint-Germain Portugal 26 Player of the Match in the Champions League final
Nico Williams Athletic Club Spain 24 Assisted the World Cup final winner
Lamine Yamal Barcelona Spain 19 World Cup winner at 19

That is 34 names for 30 places, which is roughly the size of the problem the jury faces. Ten Spanish world champions have a legitimate claim, and PSG can point to a second consecutive Champions League. Something has to give.

Breakdown by Storyline

The Spanish bloc

Spain won the World Cup conceding one goal in eight matches, and their squad is spread across Barcelona, Arsenal, PSG, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and Tottenham. Expect a dozen Spaniards in contention and a lot of them splitting each other's votes.

PSG's European repeat

Paris became the first side since Real Madrid in 2017 to retain the Champions League, beating Arsenal on penalties in Budapest. Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia, Vitinha, Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, Fabián Ruiz and Doué all have a case, but nine nominations in one year is unlikely twice running.

Youngest and oldest

Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí are both 19. Lionel Messi is 39 and has just produced eight goals and four assists at a World Cup. No previous shortlist has stretched two full decades of age at both ends with such strong cases.

Ballon d'Or 2026 Front-Runners - The Top Five

The Big Three

🥇 1. Harry Kane

Bayern Munich
61 club goals, 36 in the Bundesliga
Doubled up at home, third at the World Cup

🥈 2. Lamine Yamal

Barcelona
16 La Liga goals, 11 assists
La Liga Player of the Season, world champion

🥉 3. Rodri

Barcelona
No goals, no assists, eight matches
World Cup Golden Ball

Kane's season is the one that reads best on paper. He scored 36 times in 31 Bundesliga games, took the European Golden Shoe by 18 clear points, hit a hat-trick in the German Cup final, and added six World Cup goals as England finished third. Sixty-one goals for Bayern in all competitions is the kind of number that usually settles this award on its own.

The counter-argument is familiar. He has never won a European trophy, England lost the semi-final, and his level dipped in the last two matches of the tournament. You can follow how the market is pricing all of this on our betting odds and predictions page.

Yamal would be the youngest winner in the award's 70 years. He was La Liga Player of the Season at 18, carried Barcelona to a second consecutive title with 16 goals and 11 assists, and came home from North America with a World Cup medal. His problem is that the tournament itself passed him by. One goal and one assist in the biggest six weeks of the cycle is not the highlight reel a voter remembers.

Rodri is the awkward candidate. He did not score or assist in eight World Cup matches, yet he led the tournament in touches and tackles for a side that conceded a single goal, and the panel gave him the Golden Ball ahead of Messi and Mbappé. His summer move to Barcelona keeps him in the headlines. Whether 100 journalists reward control over output is the central question of this vote.

The Betting Market

Prices below are from late August 2026 and move constantly. They are included to show consensus, not to recommend a bet.

Ballon d'Or 2026 outright market, August 2026
Player Club Indicative Odds The Case The Doubt
Harry Kane Bayern Munich 7/4 Golden Shoe, domestic double, 6 World Cup goals No Champions League, no international trophy
Lamine Yamal Barcelona 9/4 La Liga MVP, world champion, would be youngest ever Muted World Cup, injury interrupted his run-in
Lionel Messi Inter Miami 4/1 Silver Ball, 8 goals and 4 assists at 39, MLS Cup Lost the final, plays outside Europe
Rodri Barcelona 4/1 World Cup winner and Golden Ball Zero attacking output, won this award in 2024
Kylian Mbappé Real Madrid 9/2 Golden Boot, Pichichi, Champions League top scorer Not a single trophy all season
Jude Bellingham Real Madrid 20/1 7 World Cup goals, an England record Trophyless club season
Ousmane Dembélé Paris Saint-Germain 20/1 Retained the Champions League, scored in the final France finished fourth, voters rarely repeat
Michael Olise Bayern Munich 25/1 Bundesliga Player of the Season, 19 league assists Overshadowed by his own centre-forward
Fabián Ruiz Paris Saint-Germain 25/1 Champions League and World Cup in the same season Deep midfielders need a narrative
Erling Haaland Manchester City 33/1 27 Premier League goals, knocked Brazil out No league title. Led Norway on an unprecedented run to the World Cup quarter-final

Mbappé is the most extreme case on the list. He won the Pichichi with 25 La Liga goals, finished as the Champions League's leading scorer with 15 including a record 13 in the league phase, took the World Cup Golden Boot with 10, and became the tournament's all-time top scorer on 22. He also ended the season without a single winners' medal, and had no shot on target in the semi-final defeat to Spain.

Messi's inclusion this high would have looked absurd twelve months ago. At 39, he scored a hat-trick against Algeria, a free-kick off the bench against Jordan, dragged Argentina back from two down against Egypt and set up both goals in the semi-final win over England. Then he had one shot in the final and Argentina lost. The Silver Ball reflects both halves of that.

Ballon d'Or 2026 Contenders - The Chasing Pack

This group will almost certainly be nominated and almost certainly will not win. Their seasons were excellent in ways the voting system historically undervalues - deep midfield control, goalkeeping, full-back play, and output for teams that fell just short.

Player Club Why They're Here What Was Missing
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia PSG Champions League Player of the Season, 10 goals and 6 assists in Europe Georgia did not qualify for the World Cup
Vitinha PSG Player of the Match in a retained European final Third in 2025, needs goals to climb higher
Bruno Fernandes Manchester United Premier League Player of the Season, 21 assists is a record United finished third and won nothing
Federico Dimarco Inter Serie A MVP, 18 assists and 6 goals from left wing-back Italy's absence from the World Cup narrative
Lautaro Martínez Inter Serie A top scorer, domestic double, World Cup finalist 17 league goals is a modest winning total
Achraf Hakimi PSG Champions League, Ligue 1 and an Africa Cup of Nations title Full-backs have never won this award
Bukayo Saka Arsenal First league title since 2004, hat-trick in the bronze final Lost the Champions League final on penalties
David Raya Arsenal Third consecutive Golden Glove, 19 clean sheets in a title win No goalkeeper has won since Yashin in 1963
Unai Simón Athletic Club World Cup Golden Glove, 7 clean sheets in 8 games A quiet club season by comparison
Vinícius Júnior Real Madrid 4 goals in 5 World Cup games, heavy club output Brazil went out in the last 16, Madrid won nothing

Kvaratskhelia has the strongest case nobody is making. UEFA named him the Champions League's best player across a campaign that ended with a trophy, and he produced 10 goals and 6 assists in the competition. Georgia's absence from the World Cup removes the one stage that mattered most this year, and that alone will cost him a top-five finish.

Arsenal's season is the other awkward one. They won a first league title in 22 years and reached a European final, and Raya, Saka, Rice, Gyökeres and Merino all contributed heavily. Losing the final on penalties in Budapest turns a potentially historic campaign into a very good one, and the votes will split five ways.

The Chasing Pack At A Glance

Key Point 1: Defenders and goalkeepers still face systematic bias | Key Point 2: A World Cup absence is close to disqualifying this year | Key Point 3: Teammates split each other's votes

Main Finding: The tournament outweighs the club season | Impact: Attackers from World Cup semi-finalists dominate the top of the list

Ballon d'Or 2026 - Outside Shouts and Likely Snubs

Surprise Names in the Frame

Ferran Torres scored the only goal of a World Cup final, from the bench, in the 106th minute. Only Mario Götze in 2014 had previously done that, also against Argentina. He moved from Barcelona to PSG this summer and would be a genuine surprise nomination on the strength of one swing of a left foot, but that is exactly the kind of moment that fills the bottom half of a shortlist.

Pau Cubarsí is 19 and won the World Cup Best Young Player award as a centre-back, which is close to unheard of. Unai Simón conceded one goal in eight matches. Mikel Merino came off the bench to score the winners against Portugal and Belgium in successive knockout rounds. None of them will win, and all three have a stronger claim than several names that made the 2025 list.

Estéban Lepaul is the outsider nobody outside France is discussing. He was the only player to reach 20 goals in Ligue 1 and the first non-PSG winner of the French Golden Boot in 11 years. Recent history says the jury will look straight past him.

Who Misses Out

With Spain's world champions and PSG's European winners both demanding places, several strong seasons will be squeezed out. The table below covers the most likely casualties.

Player Club Their Season Why They May Miss
Mohamed Salah Liverpool Took Egypt to their first World Cup knockout win Liverpool finished outside the top four
Estéban Lepaul Rennes Ligue 1 Golden Boot with 21 goals Mid-table club, no international profile
Luis Díaz Bayern Munich Bundesliga and German Cup double His country didn't go very far in the FIFA World cup
Florian Wirtz Liverpool A difficult first season in England Germany's early World Cup exit
Arda Güler Real Madrid Champions League Revelation of the Season Better suited to the Kopa Trophy

Salah's exclusion, if it comes, will be the one that generates most argument. Egypt reached the knockout rounds for the first time and beat Australia on penalties before losing 3-2 to Argentina from two goals up. It was almost certainly his last World Cup, and the fourth-placed finish in the 2025 vote will not carry over.

What Actually Happened in 2025-26

The jury is voting on this list of results, so it is worth setting them out plainly. Everything below falls inside the qualifying window of August 2025 to July 2026.

How the 2026 World Cup Reshaped the Ballon d'Or Race

Every fourth Ballon d'Or is different, and this one more than most. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium on 19 July, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute after Enzo Fernández had been sent off in stoppage time at the end of normal play. Argentina did not register a shot in the first 90 minutes.

Spain won the tournament by not conceding. One goal in eight matches, seven clean sheets, a Golden Glove for Unai Simón and a Golden Ball for a holding midfielder who did not score. That is a difficult story to convert into Ballon d'Or votes, because the award has always rewarded the spectacular over the structural.

The individual awards went in three directions at once. Mbappé took the Golden Boot with 10 goals and became the World Cup's all-time leading scorer on 22, passing Messi, while finishing fourth. Messi took the Silver Ball at 39. Rodri took the Golden Ball with no goal contributions at all. Sky Sports' own performance model ranked Rodri 18th in the tournament and had Messi first.

"I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final."
— Kylian Mbappé, after collecting the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot, quoted by Sky Sports

England's tournament complicates things further. They lost the semi-final 2-1 to Argentina, then beat France 6-4 in the third-place match with a Bukayo Saka hat-trick and a seventh goal of the tournament for Jude Bellingham. Six goals for Kane, seven for Bellingham and a hat-trick for Saka is a lot of Ballon d'Or evidence generated in a match that decides nothing.

The knock-on effect is that a strong club season now needs a World Cup to go with it. Kvaratskhelia, Bruno Fernandes and Dimarco all had campaigns that would have made the top ten in an ordinary year. In this one, they are competing against players who lifted a World Cup six weeks ago.

The 2025 Ballon d'Or Result in Full

Ousmane Dembélé won the 2025 award in Paris on 22 September, taking 1,380 points from the jury after PSG's first Champions League title. Lamine Yamal was second and Vitinha third. The full 30 are set out below, and they are a useful guide to how this jury thinks.

Official 2025 Ballon d'Or final standings
Rank Player Club at the Time Points
1 Ousmane Dembélé Paris Saint-Germain 1,380
2 Lamine Yamal Barcelona 1,059
3 Vitinha Paris Saint-Germain 703
4 Mohamed Salah Liverpool 657
5 Raphinha Barcelona 620
6 Achraf Hakimi Paris Saint-Germain 484
7 Kylian Mbappé Real Madrid 378
8 Cole Palmer Chelsea 211
9 Gianluigi Donnarumma PSG, then Manchester City 172
10 Nuno Mendes Paris Saint-Germain 171
11 Pedri Barcelona 124
12 Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Paris Saint-Germain 123
13 Harry Kane Bayern Munich 112
14 Désiré Doué Paris Saint-Germain 74
15 Viktor Gyökeres Arsenal 56
16 Vinícius Júnior Real Madrid 51
17 Robert Lewandowski Barcelona 49
18 Scott McTominay Napoli 45
19 João Neves Paris Saint-Germain 40
20 Lautaro Martínez Inter 37
21 Serhou Guirassy Borussia Dortmund 25
22 Alexis Mac Allister Liverpool 21
23 Jude Bellingham Real Madrid 21
24 Fabián Ruiz Paris Saint-Germain 20
25 Denzel Dumfries Inter 20
26 Erling Haaland Manchester City 18
27 Declan Rice Arsenal 13
28 Virgil van Dijk Liverpool 7
29 Florian Wirtz Liverpool 5
30 Michael Olise Bayern Munich 4

Two things stand out. The jury rewarded the Champions League winners heavily, with six PSG players in the top ten. And it placed Michael Olise 30th and Harry Kane 13th, both of whom now sit in the 2026 top five. A single season changes everything.

The other 2025 categories went to Lamine Yamal (Kopa Trophy), Gianluigi Donnarumma (Yashin Trophy), Viktor Gyökeres (Gerd Müller Trophy), Luis Enrique (Johan Cruyff Trophy) and Paris Saint-Germain (Club of the Year). No changes to that slate have been announced for 2026.

How the Ballon d'Or 2026 Winner Is Decided

The Voting System

The men's award is decided by a jury of 100 journalists, one from each of the top 100 nations in the FIFA world ranking. The women's award uses 50 journalists from the top 50 nations. UEFA has co-organised the award with France Football since 2024.

Each juror ranks ten players from the 30-man shortlist in order of merit. The points run 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 from first place down to tenth. If two players finish level, the tie is broken by the number of first-place votes, then second-place votes, and so on.

Three criteria are set out for jurors. Individual performances of a decisive or impressive character come first. Team performance and achievements come second. Class and fair play come third. In practice the first two do the work, which is why a World Cup winner's medal is worth so much this year.

Why Some Positions Struggle

The structural biases have not gone away. The last defender to win was Fabio Cannavaro in 2006, and the last goalkeeper was Lev Yashin in 1963. No full-back has ever won it, which is why Achraf Hakimi's sixth place in 2025 was remarkable in itself.

Deep-lying midfielders have done better recently. Rodri won in 2024 and Vitinha finished third in 2025, which suggests the jury is warming to players whose value does not show up in a goals column. Whether that extends to a Golden Ball winner with zero goal contributions is the test this October.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have the Ballon d'Or 2026 nominees been announced?

No. As of 25 August 2026 France Football and UEFA have not published the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. The 2025 list appeared roughly six weeks before that year's ceremony, which points to an announcement in September 2026 ahead of the 26 October event in London.

When is the Ballon d'Or 2026 ceremony?

Monday 26 October 2026 in London. It is the 70th edition of the award and the first ever staged outside Paris, with the evening built around a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner in 1956.

Who is the favourite for the Ballon d'Or 2026?

Harry Kane is the bookmakers' favourite after 36 Bundesliga goals, 61 for Bayern Munich in all competitions, a domestic double and a World Cup bronze medal. Lamine Yamal and Rodri, both World Cup winners with Spain, are next in the betting, followed by Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi.

What period does the Ballon d'Or 2026 cover?

The 2025-26 season, running from August 2025 to the end of July 2026. That window includes the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, which Spain won by beating Argentina 1-0 in the final on 19 July 2026.

How is the Ballon d'Or winner decided?

A jury of 100 journalists, one from each of the top 100 nations in the FIFA ranking, each rank ten players from the 30-man shortlist. First place is worth 15 points, then 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. Ties are broken by the number of first-place votes.

Who won the Ballon d'Or in 2025?

Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain, with 1,380 points from the jury. Lamine Yamal finished second on 1,059 and Vitinha third on 703. Dembélé defends the award in London in October 2026.

Could Lamine Yamal become the youngest ever winner?

Yes. Yamal turned 19 in July 2026 and would be comfortably the youngest winner in the award's 70-year history. Ronaldo was 21 when he won in 1997, the youngest to date.

Does winning the World Cup guarantee the Ballon d'Or?

No. Lionel Messi won the 2023 award after lifting the World Cup in Qatar, but plenty of world champions have missed out. The 2014 award went to Cristiano Ronaldo rather than any of Germany's winners, and in 2010 Lionel Messi won it while Spain's world champions filled the places behind him. Individual output still carries the most weight.

Can a defender or goalkeeper win in 2026?

It is technically possible but historically unlikely. The last defender to win was Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 and the last goalkeeper was Lev Yashin in 1963. Unai Simón, David Raya and Pau Cubarsí all have strong cases this year, but the Yashin Trophy is a more realistic target.

What other awards are presented on the night?

The Kopa Trophy for the best player under 21, the Yashin Trophy for goalkeepers, the Gerd Müller Trophy for the leading scorer, the Johan Cruyff Trophy for coaches, plus Club of the Year and the Sócrates Award for humanitarian work. Each has men's and women's categories.
