Host City: 1940 Winter Olympics

The 1940 Winter Games were originally scheduled for Sapporo, in Japan, though the Japanese pulled out as hosts in 1937 when the Sino-Japanese war broke out. St. Moritz was the next choice, but the Swiss felt that ski instructors should not be considered professionals and the IOC withdrew its offer.

Finally, the host of the 1936 Games, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany was asked to serve again as host, but the Germans invaded Poland in 1939 and the Games were eventually canceled.
