Timor-Leste, which is previously called East Timor, made its maiden appearance at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
The captivating nation in the Southeast of Asia, fielded Goutt Goncalves in the men’s slalom event in alpine skiing and placed 43rd, a great effort considering the nation is nestled in a temperate region of the world.
Goncalves was born in France - his father is French and his mother is from East Timor, allowing him to compete for the latter country. He also became the first athlete from Timor-Leste to qualify by meeting the qualification standard (all previous Summer Olympians from Timor-Leste had received wildcard entries).
