Short track speed skating started as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It was upgraded to a full Olympic sport at the following Winter Olympics in 1992 and has been part of the Winter Olympics program ever since.
Events were held from February 20-25, 1988. There were 10 events held, for men and women over 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m. Athletes from the Netherlands were the most successful, winning 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
Trivia
- The 1988 short track speed skating competition took place at the Max Bell Arena in Calgary, the same location as the curling events, which is the only time they have shared a venue in the history of Winter Olympic Games.
