The African country Gabon joined the Commonwealth of Nations and subsequently the Commonwealth Games Federation in 2022. The former French colony of Gabon joined despite not historical link to the Commonwealth.

Gabon didn’t have time to organize their associations for the 2022 Games held in July, and instead made their Commonwealth Games debut at the 2026 Games in Glasgow.

Gabon made its Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2026, the first Commonwealth Games staged with a reduced program of just 10 sports, and marked the occasion with a bronze medal to finish in a tie for thirty-sixth on the medal table.

The medal, which was the first ever won by Gabon at a Commonwealth Games came from judoka Marthe Gnacadja Avaro in the women's +78kg category. She progressed to the semi-finals before losing to New Zealand's Sydnee Andrews, then bounced back to win her bronze-medal contest and secure the podium. Avaro's success salvaged the debut for Gabon after earlier eliminations in the swimming and athletics events. The final medal standings, with Gabon's placing, are shown below.
