Anguilla is an external territory of the Unitied Kingdom, and therefore is not eligible to independently compete at the Olympic Games. The Commonwealth Games therefore, provides Anguilla's athletes with a valuable opportunity to compete in a major international multi-sport event.

Anguilla attended its first Games in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, competing in the athletics.
