Sporting Highlights for 1924

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1924. The major event of this year was the Olympic Games held in Paris France and the first Winter Olympics also in France. The Summer Games was held in Paris, France and the Winter Games was held in Chamonix, France. The United States won the summer games with 99 total medal and the host nation France finished in third place behind Finland. Norway won the winter games securing 17 total medals.



Walter Hagen, one of the all-time golf greats, won The Open Championship for the third time in his career. He also took the PGA Championship the same year for his sixth grand slam title. Walter won The Open Championship two more times and the PGA Championship three more times for a total of 11 career major titles, which currently has him placed third in the all-time major winners list.

James Anderson, Jean Borotra, and Bill Tilden, won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open respectively. It was Tilden's fifth straight title at the US Open. He took the title again the following year to become the only player to date to have won the event in six consecutive years. French player Borota won his first Wimbledon championship this year, and was still competing in the main tournament 40 years later, and in 1977 played in the Wimbledon veterans' doubles at the age of 78.

The French Open, which was open only for French players, was won by Jean Borotra. The wins at the French Open from its inception till this year is not officially recognized as a grand slam title.
