Sporting Highlights for 1919

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1919.Most of the sporting events were resumed after a four year break due to the first world war. While still some world events were not held, including the British Golf Open.

The Tour de France saw the continuation of domination by the Belgian riders who won the race in three consecutive years before the break. Firmin Lambot won the event the Belgian streak continued for another three more years.

The US Open and the PGA Championship resumed while The Open Championship took another year to get back into action. Walter Hagen won the year's US Open. It was his second win at the event in four years. Though he won the other two majors multiple times after that, the US Open remained elusive. Jim Barnes took the PGA Championship for the second time, and finished his career with one title each in the other two major events.

In tennis, the US Open was the only grand slam event that remained unaffected due to the world and was held every year. The Wimbledon and the Australian Open were resumed after a four year break. William Johnston, Gerald Patterson and Algernon Kingscote won the respective men's events. Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman and Suzanne Lenglen won the US Open and the Wimbledon in the women's events.

In US baseball, the Cincinnati Reds won their first World Series title.
