Sporting Highlights for 1902
Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1902.
Laurie Auchterlonie, the winner of the US Open, became the first golfer to break 80 in all four rounds of the tournament.
In Association football, the Real Madrid football club was founded - known initially as the Madrid Fútbol Club.
One of the sadder highlights of the year is the event that happened in a soccer game between Scotland and England at Ibrox on April 5, 1902. There were 25 people who died and a total of 500 people were reported to be injured. That was a rainy day and the huge crowd pushed their way to the top of the stand so they can watch the game better. However, since the wooden stand could not sustain the capacity and weight of the crowd, it suddenly collapsed. Amazingly, the game was not postponed.
In American football, the inaugural Rose Bowl game was played at Pasadena, California. Also, the first professional football league, the National Football League (unrelated to the current NFL) was formed. The first indoor professional American football game was held at Madison Square Garden.
In cricket, Australia and South Africa met for the first time.
At Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, a wooden terrace collapsed during a match between Scotland and England leading to the death of 26 people. The incident led to the prohibition of wooden scaffold type terraces in favour of solid earth banking.
