Sport in Malta

This archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea is considered as one of the smallest countries in the world and yet the most densely populated. The total area of this Southern European island country is just 122 square miles. Although small, the country has been occupied by various foreign powers due to its geographic location which gives it strategic significance in the region.

But with all that aside, one thing appears to be a constant in Maltese culture and that is their love of sports. Football is the top sport in Malta. Football is also one of the oldest sports in the country and most of the national matches are held in the Ta' Qali Stadium.

Their national football team has taken quite a number of international matches and has even reached the final stages of World Cups like those in Belgium as well as Hungary.

Another popular sport in Malta is rugby union. Their national rugby team, The Malta Knights, is considered as one of the best in the world even taking down perennial powerhouse teams like Croatia, Latvia and Sweden. The Knights has also produced a number of players that went on and now plays for the European Superleague.

Other sports that has garnered a good sized following includes motorsports, watersports (water polo, windsurfing, wakeboarding, etc.) and traditional sports like Bocce or Boules.
