Australia has a great record in Olympic hockey. The first Australian men's team competed in Melbourne 1956 and since then they have finished no lower than sixth. The men's tea the Kookaburras won the gold medal in Athens in 2004. The Australian women first played in 1984, and have won the gold in Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000.
Trivia
- The only Australian Test cricketer to also represent Australia at the Olympics was Brian Booth. He was part of the Australian field hockey team that finished fifth at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, though he was not utilised in any of Australia's matches. He also played in 29 Tests for Australia from 1961 to 1966.
- Nova Peris represented Australia in two different sports at the Olympic Games: Athletics in 2000 and Hockey in 1996.
- Four sets of siblings competed for Australia in Beijing - three playing in the water polo competition and one in the hockey team.
