2012 International AFL Combine

Here is information about international Australian Football combines held in 2012. These international combines use the same tests as conducted at the AFL Draft Combine. We have information about combines held in the USA, China and Ireland. There was also the inaugural international combine held in New Zealand. From the international testing, there were ten international athletes included in the AFL combine held in Melbourne October 2012.

USA Combine

The AFL held the inaugural AFL USA Combine in Los Angeles in August 2012. The three-day Combine tested 25 college athletes with basketball and football (NFL) backgrounds. The pilot program mirrored the NAB AFL Draft Combine testing, and deliberately targeted taller, elite athletes who play basketball as centers or power forwards, as they felt these athletes have the best chance to transition into AFL as potential ruckmen.

Some of the results. Derrel Acrey, a college footballer from Boise State, was most impressive jumping 90cm in the standing vertical jump. Emmanuel Moody, from Florida, was next best with a jump of 85cm. Next were Cliff Ederaine (82cm), Scottie Farrington (82), Spencer Perrin (81) and Quinn Porter (81). Overall, six of the 25 players who attended eclipsed the previous Australian football record for vertical leap, which had been 78 cm (30.7 inches).

European Combine

A combine was held at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, Dublin in February 2012. From the combine results two Irishmen, Kildare's Seán Hurley and Derry's Emmet Bradley, were selected to attend the AFL National Combine in Melbourne later in the year.

New Zealand Combine

The AFL held its inaugural New Zealand combine in 2012.

China Combine

A two-day AFL Combine was held in July 2012 at the Guangzhou Sports University campus in the Guangzhou, Guangdong province. A standout performance was by Chinese athlete Chen Xiaoliang (Chen Shao Liang), who has a background in volleyball and basketball. He had a standing jump of 86cm and a running jump of 99cm. Xiaoliang was selected to attend the NAB AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne in October.
