The Monaco Grand Prix is an annual Formula One motor race held in Monaco. The race is known for its exceptional glamour and prestige. The race is held along the Circuit de Monaco, a street circuit in Monte Carlo. The event is part of the Motorsports Triple Crown.
The race occurs on the streets of Monaco which involves numerous elevation changes, tight corners, a tunnel and narrow ways. This is considered to be one of the most testing tracks in Formula One racing. The speed of the racers is often dramatically reduced in compared to other events, like the Indy 500. However, due to the high rates of accidents there is often a safety car on the track guiding the race.
The first race started in 1929 and was by invitation only. It grew in popularity and was later announced as a Grand Prix event.
Those racing today are expected to perform a time trial to compete for their starting spot on the track. In the beginning, drivers submit a ballot and were drawn for their spots.
Interesting Fact: Graham Hill was dubbed “Mr. Monaco” for his 5 wins of the Monaco 500 during the 1960s. However, Brazil Ayrton Senna is renowned for his 6 victories with 5 consecutive wins between 1989 and 1993.
