There were six cycling events held at the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, of those five have been discontinued. The cycling event on the program that is still held today is the road race.

The time trial event was held over the distance of one-third of a kilometre. When the event returned to the Olympic program for the 1928 Summer Olympics, the distance was set at one kilometre.
