Sugar & GI Myth:

Sugar is not good for people with diabetes, true or false?

THIS IS BOTH TRUE AND FALSE

  • Glycaemic Index is a rating on CHO foods for blood glucose changes. High GI foods have a sharp and large effect on blood sugar levels. Low GI foods have a more sustained effect on blood sugar levels and energy.
  • White sugar is moderate in GI, meaning it is not the worst, however, watch for high amounts of hidden sugars in many foods. Food nutrition labels and ingredient lists can tell you this
  • Fat content, balance of nutrients and GI is more important than ‘sugar’
