Alcohol Myth:

Alcohol is good for your health - true or false?

THIS IS TRUE AND FALSE

  • J curve – a small amount of alcohol can be better for you than no drinks at all, and the more you drink the more damage you are doing to your body.
  • Alcohol can increase the HDL (good cholesterols) in the blood which lowers the risk of heart disease

however

  • More than recommended can have a detrimental effect on the brain, liver, heart and many other bodily organs. The current safe drinking recommendations are: 1-2 standard drinks a day, 5 times per week
  • Alcohol has a diuretic effect which causes dehydration
