Australian Track and Field athletes at the Olympics
- Australia’s first-ever gold medalist was
Edwin Flack, who won gold in the 800m and 1500m in Athens 1896. Edwin Flack
is one of the few athletes to compete at the Olympics in two different sports: Athletics
and Tennis both in 1896.
- The Olympic torchbearer for the 1956 Olympics was Ron Clarke, a virtually unknown
19 year old at the time. Ron Clarke went on to become the world's finest distance
runner in the 1960s.
- Sprinter Paul Narracott
competed for Australia in athletics in 1984, and also went on to represent Australia at the Winter Olympics in
Bobsleigh in 1992.
- Nova Peris
also represented Australia in two different sports at the Olympic Games: Athletics in 2000
and Hockey in 1996.
- Donna Kite
also represented Australia in two different sports at the Olympic Games: Athletics in 1984
and Road Cycling in 1988.
- Olympic sprinter Shirley Strickland was also a nuclear physicist.
