Ultimate, also called ultimate Frisbee, Flatball or just Frisbee, is a sport played with a flying disc or what is commonly known as Frisbee. The sport of ultimate is based on a combination of elements from various sports such as soccer, American football, and basketball, and involves players passing a flying disc (frisbee) down the field to score points by catching it in the opponent's end zone. The first ultimate game was played at Columbia High School in New Jersey in the 1960’s between students.
The aim is to pass the flying disc to a teammate in the opposing end zone. The game starts with both teams at opposite ends, and they try to advance the flying disc, or Frisbee, to the other end zone. If a pass is intercepted, the opponent gains possession.
Ultimate is played with two teams, with seven members teams, sometimes fewer. The teams compete to score points by passing a flying disc to teammates and catching it in the opponent's end zone.
Players cannot run with the disc; instead, they must pass it to their teammates within ten seconds. If the disc is intercepted, dropped, or goes out of bounds, possession changes to the opposing team. Physical contact between players is not allowed, and the game relies on self-officiating and sportsmanship, with players resolving disputes through respectful discussion.
Ultimate is typically played on a rectangular field with end zones at each end, and the team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
There are leagues all over the world for this game. USA Ultimate and Ultimate Canada are among those leagues.
