The 2026/27 college football season kicks off in Week 0 on Saturday, August 29th, headlined by North Carolina against TCU in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin. Conference championship weekend runs Friday, December 4th to Saturday, December 5th, with the playoff field confirmed on Selection Day the following afternoon.

The first round is played at campus sites on Friday, December 18th and Saturday, December 19th, as the teams seeded 5th through 12th compete for a place in the last eight. Each winner then meets one of the top four seeds, who receive a bye into the quarterfinals. The semifinals are the Orange Bowl on January 14th and the Sugar Bowl on January 15th, with the victors advancing to the Championship game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Monday, January 25th.

Above, you'll find our at-a-glance college football playoff bracket, which can help you to visualize potential routes to the showpiece match. The first 2026-27 College Football Playoff rankings won't be released until Tuesday, November 3, 2026. That data is then updated weekly, before the final playoff bracket is revealed on Selection Day, Sunday, December 6th.

Projected 12-Team Bracket & Odds to Make the Playoff (DraftKings, August 18, 2026)
Proj. Seed Team Conference Preseason AP Odds to Make CFP Playoff Chances (%)
1 (Bye) Ohio State Buckeyes Big Ten 1 -360 78.3%
2 (Bye) Notre Dame Fighting Irish Independent 4 -800 88.9%
3 (Bye) Oregon Ducks Big Ten 2 -320 76.2%
4 (Bye) Georgia Bulldogs SEC 3 -240 70.6%
5 Indiana Hoosiers (defending champion) Big Ten 6 -350 77.8%

8 Texas Tech Red Raiders Big 12 12 -200 66.7%
9 Texas A&M Aggies SEC 8 +154 39.4%
10 LSU Tigers SEC 11 +160 38.5%
11 Ole Miss Rebels SEC 9 +200 33.3%
12 Group of Six champion (auto-bid) Pac-12 / American / MWC / Sun Belt / MAC / C-USA NR 100% (reserved slot)

Key Finding: Notre Dame carries the shortest make-the-playoff price on the board at -800, an implied 88.9% chance, despite ranking behind Ohio State, Oregon and Georgia in the preseason AP poll. The market is effectively pricing the Irish schedule, not the Irish roster — playing no conference championship game removes the last, riskiest hurdle every other contender still has to clear.

Calculate Your Playoff Bets

Work out the payout and implied probability on any playoff futures price

If you intend to place an outright bet at the current college football championship odds, you may want to consider backing more than one playoff contender. You can focus on short-priced teams that have a high probability of qualifying for the cfb playoff bracket, before combining these in a parlay that increases your potential returns.

You can also use our parlay calculator to calculate your potential return and implied probability values. For example, you can combine Ohio State (-360), Oregon (-320) and Georgia (-240) to make the playoff at combined odds of roughly +138, implying a 42.1% chance of success. A winning $10 stake would return $23.76 for a profit of $13.76. Just remember that all three teams have to qualify for the bet to come in.

Understanding the tournament structure is key to predicting which teams will advance through the rounds. As the playoff picture forms, college football betting sites reprice national championship futures after every Saturday slate, giving bettors the opportunity to find value as the race for the title intensifies.

How the 12-Team College Football Playoff Works

Before you compare the current college football playoff odds, it's important to understand how the 12-team structure works. We'll break this down in more detail below, analyzing the distribution of auto-bids and the criteria used to determine the rest of the field.

Automatic Qualifiers

The College Football Playoff hands out five automatic bids. Four go to the champions of the Power Four conferences — the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC and the fifth goes to the highest-ranked champion from outside that group.

That fifth bid is contested by the so-called Group of Six: the American, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt and the rebuilt Pac-12, which fields a full FBS membership again in 2026 after adding Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State and Texas State. Notre Dame remains independent and is eligible for an at-large bid whenever it finishes inside the top 12.

Straight seeding, introduced for the 2025 season, remains in force: the four highest-ranked teams overall receive the first-round byes, regardless of whether they won a conference. Below is how last season's field actually broke down.

2025 Conference Champions in the 12-Team Field
Conference Champion Playoff Seed How Their Playoff Ended
Big Ten Indiana Hoosiers 1 National champions — beat Miami 27-21
SEC Georgia Bulldogs 3 Lost the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal to Ole Miss, 39-34
Big 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders 4 Shut out by Oregon in the Orange Bowl quarterfinal, 23-0
ACC Miami Hurricanes 10 Runners-up — first double-digit seed to reach the final
American (Group of Six auto-bid) Tulane Green Wave 11 Lost the first round at Ole Miss, 41-10
Sun Belt James Madison Dukes (13-1) 12 Lost the first round at Oregon, 51-34

At-Large Selection

The remaining seven spots in the college football playoff bracket go to the highest ranked teams left on the board, regardless of conference. To set those rankings, the selection committee weighs several criteria:

Win-Loss Record

Measures each team's win-loss record, including regular season games and conference championship games.

Strength of Schedule

Weighs results against the quality of opponents faced. ESPN's FPI has Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas facing the three toughest 2026 schedules, with nine of the top ten from the SEC.

Head-to-Head Results

The committee compares head-to-head results to separate teams with otherwise identical resumes.

Championship Games Won

Conference championship victories count as significant accomplishments and act as potential tiebreakers.

Common Opponents

Results against common opponents, accounting for final result, score and venue.

College Football Championship Odds 2026-27

Before you make any cfb playoff predictions for 2026/27, it's important to analyze the current Championship odds. This is a key indicator of team strength and form, while the cfb championship odds also reveal the implied probability of each potential outcome. You can also use our Implied Probability Calculator to convert sportsbook odds into probability percentages.
So, let's take a closer look at the early betting favorites and the most appealing value picks.

Current Championship Favorites

The Big Ten has now won three national championships in a row — Michigan in 2023, Ohio State in 2024 and Indiana in 2025 — and the market expects a fourth. Ohio State opens as the favorite at +600, an implied 14.3% chance, having reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the preseason AP poll released on August 17th.

What stands out is how little separates the top of the board. Six teams sit inside +900: Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Texas, Georgia and defending champion Indiana. Add those implied probabilities together and you are already past 69% before a single Group of Six contender or dark horse is priced — a reminder of how much overround sits in a preseason futures market and why line shopping matters more here than almost anywhere else.

"Last season demolished the idea that the 12-team bracket protects the top seeds. Six of the eleven playoff games were won by the lower seed, a No. 10 seed reached the final, and the champion had opened the season at +10000. Seeding tells you who hosts — it no longer tells you who wins."
— Robert J. Wood, PhD in Exercise Physiology, University of Western Australia, Founder of Topend Sports

Notre Dame at +650 is the most interesting shape on the board. The Irish are only fourth in the preseason AP poll, yet they are the heaviest favorite of anyone to reach the field at -800. Independence is worth real money in a straight-seeding system: no conference title game means no thirteenth chance to pick up the loss that costs you a bye.

Indiana, meanwhile, has drifted to a co-fourth choice at +900 after going 16-0 — the first FBS team to finish a season undefeated and untied under the expanded format. Repeating is historically brutal, and the Hoosiers draw road tests at Ohio State and Michigan once conference play opens. Their -350 make-the-playoff price looks the sounder side of the two markets.

Value Bets & Long Shots

Using the current odds to win the college football championship, here are the outright picks we rate as the best value.

💰Best Championship Value Bets

1. Notre Dame (+650): The disconnect between Notre Dame's championship price and its make-the-playoff price is the most striking on the board. At -800 to qualify, the market gives the Irish an 88.9% chance of being in the bracket — higher than anyone — yet prices them second for the title. Independence means no conference championship game, which under straight seeding is worth a great deal: the last hurdle before Selection Day, the one that has cost contenders byes in each of the past two seasons, simply doesn't exist for them.

2. Miami (+1100): The Hurricanes reached the final as a No. 10 seed, beating Ohio State and Ole Miss on the way, and are now No. 7 in the preseason poll with a -280 make-the-playoff price. The ACC remains the softest route of any contender's conference, and a team that has already proven it can win three neutral-site games in a row is worth more than the market's 8.3% implied chance.

3. Indiana (+900): Backing a defending champion is rarely value, and repeating is genuinely difficult — but a +10000 preseason shot that went 16-0 is not the same team the market was pricing twelve months ago. Fernando Mendoza's Heisman season and the return of a defense that shut out nobody's idea of a soft schedule justify the shorter price. The caveat is real: road games at Ohio State and Michigan arrive early, and one slip in a straight-seeded field costs the bye.

Using our Dutching calculator, you can distribute your bankroll across several outcomes to guarantee a fixed return. Splitting $100 across Ohio State (+600), Notre Dame (+650) and Texas (+850) — roughly $37.45, $34.95 and $27.60 respectively — returns about $262 whichever of the three wins, for a guaranteed profit of around $162.

College Football Playoff Predictions

The first official playoff rankings for 2026/27 won't be published until November 3rd, and Selection Day is Sunday, December 6th. The official college football playoff bracket isn't finalized until that afternoon. In the meantime, it's possible to build a projected college football playoff bracket from current odds, implied probability and last season's results.

CFB Playoff Bracket Predictions

Eight teams currently carry a better-than-65% implied chance of reaching the 2026/27 playoff. Notre Dame leads the way at 88.9%, ahead of preseason No. 1 Ohio State (78.3%) and defending champions Indiana (77.8%).

Oregon and Miami sit at 76.2% and 73.7% respectively, both having gone deep last season — Oregon to the Peach Bowl semifinal, Miami all the way to the final. Georgia is at 70.6% off the back of an SEC title, while Texas and Texas Tech share a -200 price and a 66.7% implied chance. Texas Tech is the most interesting of that group: the Big 12 champion earned a bye at No. 4 last season, but was shut out 23-0 by Oregon in the Orange Bowl quarterfinal and starts this season only 12th in the AP poll.

Detailed Playoff Projections & Analysis
Preseason AP Rank Team 2025 Playoff Finish Playoff Odds Championship Odds

2 Oregon Ducks (Big Ten) No. 5 seed — lost Peach Bowl SF to Indiana, 56-22 -320 (76.2%) +800 (11.1%)
3 Georgia Bulldogs (SEC) No. 3 seed — lost Sugar Bowl QF to Ole Miss, 39-34 -240 (70.6%) +900 (10.0%)
4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Independent) Missed the field -800 (88.9%) +650 (13.3%)
5 Texas Longhorns (SEC) Missed the field -200 (66.7%) +850 (10.5%)
6 Indiana Hoosiers (Big Ten) No. 1 seed — national champions, 16-0 -350 (77.8%) +900 (10.0%)
7 Miami Hurricanes (ACC) No. 10 seed — runners-up, lost 27-21 to Indiana -280 (73.7%) +1100 (8.3%)

Outside that group, LSU is the team to watch in 2026/27. The Tigers are 11th in the preseason AP poll and priced at +160 to make the playoff, an implied 38.5% chance, but they carry the widest championship range of any ranked side (+1500 to +2500 depending on the book). Their opening stretch offers almost no adjustment time. Texas A&M and Alabama are the other two live at-large candidates, both at +154 (39.4%), while USC (+240) and Michigan (+250) headline the tier below.

College Football Playoff History & Trends

As we've touched on, relying too heavily on historical data when appraising the latest college football playoff odds is fraught with risk — never more so than now, with only two seasons of 12-team history and those two seasons disagreeing with each other. Some trends are still highly informative.

Past Champions & Odds

Of the last five national champions, three entered the playoff as the top seed. Georgia broke that pattern in 2021 as the No. 3 seed, and Ohio State broke it far more dramatically in 2024, winning the first 12-team playoff from the No. 8 seed.

Last season delivered the most extreme result yet. Indiana opened 2025 at +10000 — twenty-two teams were priced shorter — and finished 16-0 as national champions, the longest preseason price ever to win the title. Miami, meanwhile, became the first double-digit seed to reach the final, beating No. 2 Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinal and No. 6 Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal before losing 27-21.

The takeaway for anyone weighing this year's board: preseason position has predicted very little under the expanded format. Two 12-team playoffs have produced a No. 8 seed champion and a preseason unranked champion.

Historical Championship Winners & Odds
Season Champion Preseason Odds Playoff Seed Key Upset
2025 Indiana +10000 No. #1 No. 10 Miami beat No. 2 Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinal
2024 Ohio State +800 No. #8 Ohio State beat top-ranked Oregon in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal
2023 Michigan +1200 No. #1 Washington defeated Texas in the second semifinal
2022 Georgia +500 No. #1 TCU defeated No. #2 ranked Michigan in the semifinal
2021 Georgia +800 No. #3 Georgia beat No. #1 Alabama in the CFP final

Key Finding: Only two of the last five champions were the No. 1 seed entering the playoff. Ohio State won from No. 8 in 2024 and Indiana won in 2025 having opened the season at +10000, with 22 teams priced shorter — clear evidence that neither preseason position nor playoff seeding guarantees championship success.

Betting Trends

Making successful NCAAF playoff predictions is challenging, whether you want to pick the outright champion or the outcome of individual postseason games. Here are the trends worth carrying into 2026/27:

Seeding Stopped Predicting Winners

In the 2025/26 playoff, the higher seed won just 5 of 11 games (45.5%). The lower seed took six, including three of the four quarterfinals. A year earlier, favorites had dominated — so treat seed as a guide to venue, not to outcome.

Home Field Still Means Something

Across both 12-team playoffs, first-round hosts are 6-2 (75.0%). All four won in 2024/25; two of four lost in 2025/26. Campus-site advantage in December remains real, but it is no longer close to automatic.

The Big Ten Is the Bet

The Big Ten has won three consecutive national championships — Michigan (2023), Ohio State (2024) and Indiana (2025) — and three of the last four overall. It placed three teams in last season's 12-team field, and all three reached at least the quarterfinals.

Higher Seed Win Rate (2025/26 Playoff) 45.5%

First-Round Hosts Winning (Both 12-Team Playoffs) 75.0%

Big Ten Share of Last Four National Titles 75.0%

College Football Playoff Betting Strategies

When betting on your cfb playoff predictions, there are several strategies you can deploy. These include the dutching approach above, which distributes your bankroll between two or more potential outright winners. Here are some additional strategies, usable pre-game and in-play once the playoffs have started:

📈 Hedging Championship Futures

As an alternative to dutching, you can hedge your Championship futures. Say you've backed Ohio State outright at +600 with a $100 stake, and they reach the final in Las Vegas against an opponent priced at +180.

Your original ticket returns $700 if it lands. Our hedging calculator puts the optimal hedge at $250 on the opponent, since $250 at +180 also returns $700.

That creates a total outlay of $350. Whichever team wins, you collect $700 — a guaranteed profit of $350, versus a $600 profit or a $100 loss if you'd let the original bet ride. That is the trade: you're selling roughly $250 of upside to remove all of the downside.

Live Betting the Playoff

Regardless of how the college football playoff bracket 2026-27 plays out against your picks, you can look to maximize profits through live betting. That includes hedging pre-game selections in-play, or simply reacting to events in real time and capitalizing on natural breaks in the action such as half-time.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the College Football Playoff bracket come out?

If you're wondering when the college football playoff bracket is announced, it's Sunday, December 6, 2026. That reveal confirms the five automatic bids, the seven at-large bids and the four first-round byes, all between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM ET.

How does the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket work?

Before you make your own cfb playoff bracket predictions, you'll need to know how the selection process works. The 12-team playoff includes five automatic bids — one for each Power Four champion plus the highest-ranked champion from outside them — with the remaining seven places filled by at-large selections. Under straight seeding, the four highest-ranked teams overall receive byes into the quarterfinals.

What are the current College Football Championship odds?

Preseason No. 1 Ohio State is the +600 favorite to win the National Championship in 2026/27. Notre Dame is next at +650, followed by Oregon (+800), Texas (+850) and then Georgia and defending champions Indiana, both at +900. Miami, beaten finalists last season, are +1100.

How do you bet on the College Football Playoff bracket?

When betting on your cfb playoff bracket predictions, there are a number of wagers you can place. These include futures on the eventual champion and make-the-playoff markets on individual teams. How do odds to make the College Football Playoff work?

The odds to reach the cfb playoff reveal both your potential return and the implied probability of that outcome. Notre Dame, for instance, is priced at -800 to qualify in 2026/27, which carries an implied probability of 88.9%, but you'd have to stake $800 to win $100. Compare that with Ole Miss at +200, where a $100 stake wins $200 at an implied 33.3%.

What's the difference between playoff odds and championship odds?

Playoff odds describe a team's chance of qualifying for the 12-team bracket, and the highest-ranked teams are usually short prices in that market. Championship odds relate to the eventual outright winner, so the same teams carry much longer prices, with higher potential returns and lower implied probability. Ohio State illustrates the gap neatly: -360 to make the field, but +600 to win it all.
