What does a Sport Psychologist do?

There are many aspects of sports psychology. A sports psychologist works with athletes to achieve their optimum mental health and well being, ultimately to improve their sporting performance. They may deal with athletes who are recovering from injury, who are under performing, struggling with pressure, or help to improve their motivation.

As well as working directly with athletes, some sports psychologists may also teach at the university level or perform research.

How to become a Sport Psychologist

A sports psychologist needs to be interested in people and human behavior, able to solve problems, have an inquisitive mind, patience and perceptiveness, and have good oral and written communication skills. In order to practice as a sport psychologist, you will require a number of years at university, plus post-graduate study and practical supervised experience in the field.
