Sporting Highlights for 1987

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1987. In major events, this year the first-ever Rugby World Cup was held, hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand, and won by New Zealand.



There have been stretches in NBA games where teams struggle to score, but none more epic than the four points scored by Sacramento Kings in the first quarter against LA Lakers. The team however recovered from the poor start and finished the match with 92 points. Just when you thought this will remain as the lowest score in a quarter for ever, the Dallas Mavericks scored just two points in the entire third quarter against LA Lakers in 1997.

In tennis, Stefan Edberg won his second Australian Open title. He also won two doubles title that year, in Australian Open and the US Open. Ivan Lendl won both the French Open and the US Open for the third time. Martina Navratilova, the all-time great also won two titles, Wimbledon and US Open. Michael Chang set a record by being the youngest player, at 15, to win a US Open match. Hana Mandlikova, won her fourth and final grand slam at the Australian Open defeating the all-time great Martina Navratilova.

Sunil Gavaskar scored 10,000 test runs to become the first-ever player to reach this mark. In the almost three decades since then, there have been only seven players who have exceeded that mark. It was also the year of the cricket World Cup which Australia won by defeating England.

b was successful in two heavyweight title fights defeating Bonecrusher Smith and Pinklon Thomas.
