Four Square

Four square is a sport that is also known as square ball, box ball, champ, handball and king’s corner. It is a ball game played among four players on a square shaped court which is divided into four quadrants. It is a very simple sport that can be played indoors or outdoors on any hard surface where a ball can bounce off the ground. It is a popular game all around the world due to the reason it requires little equipment and almost no setup is required.

This sport is played with a rubber playground ball, a tennis ball or a volleyball on a square shaped court among four maximum players. The main objective of this four square sport is to eliminate other players to achieve the higher rank.

Four Square is played on a hard surface court which can be of wood, concrete and asphalt with a covered area of 16 feet. The court is divided into four smaller equal size squares with the sides measuring up to 8 feet. Every square in the quadrant has a rank and is occupied by a single player. To gain the higher quadrant the player will have to hit the other player by throwing the ball by hand. After the player eliminates the other player the quadrant will be empty.

The objective of the sport is to hit the ball onto any of the other players square, within a single bounce on the player's own square. Holding, carrying or extended contact is not allowed. A match can be played with several players. The first four players start of as the others wait in line. Players are eliminated if they are unable to return the ball fairly. The other players in the field move up to the next ranking boxes. A new player next in line enters the lowest ranking box to continue the match.

The sport is primarily played by kids at high school level for recreation. However a Four Square World Championships event is conducted every year, where adults play the sport competitively.
