Greatest 2018 Sporting Highlights

There were many highlights in the sporting world for 2018 (see our 2018 year in review for a full rundown). Here are our top five. Take the poll and let us know your favorite.

At the FIFA World Cup, the lowly ranked Russian national football team and host nation surprised many with great early tournament form, including a shock win over one of the pre-tournament favorites Spain which advanced them into the quarter-finals.

At the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the participation of North Korea was not guaranteed. Not only did they send a team, they entered the stadium alongside South Korea during the opening ceremony as a unified Korea, and fielded a unified team in the women's ice hockey tournament.

There was excitement at the World Chess Championships. The main tournament ended with 12 consecutive draws, the only time in the history that this has ever happened, requiring a rapid chess tie-breaker round.

Naomi Osaka became Japan's first-ever Grand Slam singles champion, with her win over Serena Williams at the US Open.

The passing of Roger Bannister, the first person to run a four-minute mile.
