At the FIFA World Cup, the lowly ranked Russian national football team and host nation surprised many with great early tournament form, including a shock win over one of the pre-tournament favorites Spain which advanced them into the quarter finals.
At the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the participation of North Korea was not guaranteed. Not only did they send a team, they entered the stadium alongside South Korea during the opening ceremony as a unified Korea, and fielded a unified team in the women's ice hockey tournament.
There was excitement at the World Chess Championships. The main tournament ended with 12 consecutive draws, the only time in the history that this has ever happened, requiring a rapid chess tie-breaker round.
